- Denise Graves
(Metropolitan Opera) Beautifully sang the National
Anthem! (OH Goose Bumps) as a bald eagles were released
... A huge American flag was unfurled on the infield,
Fireworks went off overhead and then 4 - F16's did their
fly by ..... Perfect! What a great country! What
a great sport!
- Grand Marshall Chad Holiday, CEO from DuPont, said
those famous four words ... Gentlemen (he forgot Lady)
start your engines.
- Sunny -- mid 70's
- Jay Leno drove the Pontiac, Firebird Pace Car
- Dave Marcis went to the front for a Ceremonial
lap, Dave will retire after today's race.
- Rusty Wallace, Shawna Robinson and Dave Blaney
are in back up cars, starting at the back of the field.
- 180,000 fans in attendance
- All drivers are wearing the HANS or Hutchens Device.
- All Over the wall crew are wearing helmets

Pace Laps -- Mike Wallace stalled on the apron
... He was pushed by a tow truck, that got him started, he
goes to the end of the field. Ignition Problems.
-- Lap 3 - Silent lap in honor of Dale Earnhardt and ALL
Fallen Heroes.
-- Lap 3 - Tony Stewart is off the pace .... DNF
"It
is the motor, I don't know what happened, it just laid
down," Tony said over the radio "I'm glad I didn't
start a wreck, but the motor just laid down." "We're
done, "It's junk."
-- Lap 4 - Michael Waltrip, Defending winner,Takes
the lead!
-- Lap 9 - Dave Blaney is off the pace ....
CAUTION
1Lap #22 - Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (Looses a tire (Debris
was on the track), the car is torn all to pieces on the right
front fender, hood and more.
Kevin Harvick and Mike Skinner had contact in the
pits, Harvick has damage. Bobby Labonte
was boxed in by Shawna Robinson. Terry Labonte
was in with his hood open, all is okay they thought they
picked up the debris also. Kurt Busch slid through his
pit into the, luckly for the team, vacant #20 Stewart pit. Harvick
and Earnhardt Jr. pitted four times each
RESTARTLap #27 (after 5 caution laps) Matt
Kenseth, Kenny Schrader, John Andretti, Ryan Newman and
Sterling Marlin are the top five.

stretch ... Jerry Nadeau, Jeff Gordon and Many
others pit .... -- Lap 82 - Jeff Burton leads during these GREEN

CAUTION
2 Lap
#83 - Dave Marcis has run out of fuel also on the back
stretch .. He couldn't make it back to pit road.
Mike Skinner ran out of fuel. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. came in for a new front fender, Dave
Marcis (DNF - retired) went into the garage due to over
heating, all the debris of napkins paper and such caught
up in the grill. Dave was running his final Race, his
33rd Daytona 500.
Many of the leaders came in for a splash and go. Ricky Rudd hit a tire on pit road, suffered damage. Stacy Compton broke a rear gear, he is behind the wall.
RESTARTLap #88 Bobby Labonte leads(after 5
Caution laps) 35 cars on the lead lap.
-- Lap 89 - Sterling Marlin regains the lead.
CAUTION
3Lap #95 - Debris from Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jr. cut his
right rear tire and was coming into the pits when he went
sliding through the grass
Robbery Pressley was held one lap for pitting out of
his pit box (SIGH) Jr. goes into the garage. Jr. said "I ain't
talkin' right now" to a reporter. Jeff Burton's crew member's foot was run over.
RESTARTLap #100 ~HALF
WAY~ (after
5 caution laps) Sterling Marlin, Ricky Rudd, Mark Martin and
Jeff Gordon were the only drivers not to pit and are the
top 4 drivers
CAUTION
4Lap #100 -Brett Bodine hits the wall in turn 1. Brett
lost his crew chief Just before today's race.
RESTARTLap #104 (after 4 caution laps) Sterling
Marlin, Ricky Rudd, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon and Matt
Kenneth
-- Lap 107 - Dale Earnhardt, Jr. came back out 11
laps down in 39th position.
He said "Hey guys, It's alive again, lets get back at
it"! Evidently NASCAR made him come back in
saying he did not have brakes, when Tony Eury, crew chief
for the #8 Chevy, said he did have brakes, the blown tire
had wrapped around the right rear housing
-- Lap 127 - Dale Jarrett is off the pace, he got
loose.
-- Lap 127 - Ricky Rudd reports loosing his handeling.
CAUTION
5 Lap
#138 - Shawn Robinson got loose, she and Mike Skinner
and wrecked in turn 2.
Rusty Wallace was blocked in his pit, his crew had to
push him back so he could get out.
RESTARTLap #143 (after 5 caution laps) Sterling
Marlin (came in 1st went out first!) Kevin Harvick,
Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Elliott Sadler are the
top 5 drivers. 32 cars on the lead lap.
CAUTION
6 Lap
#146 - THE BIG ONE --- 17 cars -- Jeff Gordon and Kevin
Harvick made contact, Kevin Harvick wrecked hard,
Matt Kenseth, Johnny Benson, Ricky Rudd, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kenny Wallace, Mike Wallace, John Andretti, Jerry
Nadeau, Bobby Hamilton, Joe Nemechek, Bobby Labonte, Todd
Bodine, Casey Atwood, Todd Bodine, Kenny Schrader and Jeremy
Mayfield were all caught up in this. ALL drivers got out
of their cars and are all okay, Thank God.
"Typical restrictor plate racing". Ricky Rudd
said
Kenny Wallace said "I guess everyone wants to know
what happened huh .... A Big Wreck." Kevin Harvick Said "I thought there was enough
room and I came down and hit the nose of Gordon's car."
Jeff Gordon missed pit road, came back around.
Kurt Busch did not stop under this caution ... he
leads.
RESTARTLap #158 (after 12 caution laps) Just 18
cars left on the lead lap. Sterling Marlin, Kurt Busch,
Elliott Sadler, Bill Elliott and Michael Waltrip
are the leaders.
-- Lap 160 - Kurt Busch takes the lead (he lead earlier
under green flag pits).
-- Lap 162 - 3 wide racin' 5 rows deep! Yike!

#172 - Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Green make contact.

Michael Waltrip in 2nd, he pits .... many follow.

finish line.
Jeff Gordon is on Pit Road-while it was closed-he goes to the
end of the line, The spotter said he got spun. Jeff said
he got himself turned

Marlin (Leader)
has a couple things in question -- did he advance a position
under the yellow line and he got out of his car during this RED
flag?
The officials let him look at his fender, but he was NOT
allowed to work on the car as it was during a RED
flag.
He wanted to see if the fender was rubbing on a tire, it
looked like he might have pulled on the fender.
Word from The American (not French) Judges, Marlin goes
to the tail end of the longest line for working on the car
during a RED
flag.
